[TH] The China House by Chef Fei @ Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok

It has been nearly a decade since our last visit to The China House at Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, and our return was driven by one unforgettable dish: their legendary Peking Duck. The memory lingered for years, making this revisit long overdue and highly anticipated.

Much has changed since then. The restaurant is now officially known as The China House by Chef Fei, signaling a new chapter. Along with the name change, both the exterior and interior have been fully renovated, giving the restaurant a completely refreshed look and feel. In our opinion, the overall direction of the cuisine has also evolved alongside the rebranding.

The most noticeable transformation is the ambiance. The China House once embraced a bold, dark, and dramatic black-themed design. Today, the space feels brighter and more modern, with pastel tones and lighter colors dominating the interior. While design preferences are subjective, we personally found the previous darker atmosphere more aligned with the restaurant’s original character.

When we were seated, we were attended by a highly engaging and attentive server, which immediately set a positive tone for the meal.

Our first order was the Peking Duck, the sole reason for our visit. The duck was on the smaller side but comfortably served three portions. The crispy roasted duck skin and meat were wrapped neatly in thin pancake slices. Notably, the wrapping style differed from our previous visit. When we asked about this, we were told it was due to a change in the restaurant’s overall cooking style.

With each bite, we enjoyed a well-balanced combination of textures and flavors—the crispiness of the duck, the sharp punch of shredded onions, the freshness of cucumber, and the sweetness of the hoisin sauce. Still amazing.

Our second dish was the Char Siu. The marinated pork was exceptionally tender, with a well-rounded sweetness that stood out.

We ended the meal with the Wagyu Fried Rice. While it wasn’t particularly exciting on its own, the addition of shredded duck meat and lettuce enhanced the dish and rounded out the dining experience nicely.

Overall, The China House is still the top peiking duck on my list. We would always come back for the dish. As noted in my 2016 visit to the shop, portions are big so make sure you don’t over-order. Go try the iconic dish…
