[KR] Sanghairu 상해루 @ Nonhyun 논현, Seoul

Below Gangnam-daero in Nonhyeon, Shanghairu (상해루) carries the legacy of a respected Korean-Chinese kitchen that started in Dongtan before coming to Seoul. It’s a dependable, crowd-pleasing choice for lunch meetings, family dinners and anyone craving well-made classics.

The venue

Inside is a wide, open hall lit by rows of golden silk lanterns. Carved wooden medallions and warm timber tables give it a polished, modern-Chinese feel. The centrepiece is a huge projection wall that cycles through scenes of traditional rooftops and dragons. It’s eye-catching, but the constant motion can feel a little dizzying, so you may prefer a seat facing away from it. Service is quick and attentive, tea arrives in thermoses at every table, and the room fills with office workers at lunch. Reservations, private rooms and valet parking make it easy for groups.

The food review

The house tangsuyuk is what regulars come back for. The pork is tossed in a light, ketchup-free sweet-and-sour glaze with wood ear mushrooms, cucumber and carrot, and the batter stays crisp under the sauce.

The gochu japchae is a glossy, savoury tangle of pork slivers, bell pepper, bamboo shoots and enoki, and it goes perfectly with steamed rice.

Golden fried dumplings come fanned around a sprig of parsley. The edges are crunchy and the filling is juicy.

For something warming, the jjamppong-bap is a brick-red seafood broth with a clean, gentle heat.

Beyond the classics, the mala tofu noodles have a devoted following for their bold spice. The crab meat stir-fry and chili prawns are popular for sharing, and the complimentary ice cream makes a sweet finish.

The verdict

Shanghairu doesn’t chase trends. It serves reliable, well-balanced Korean-Chinese cooking in a comfortable, spacious room. The menu leans classic rather than adventurous, but every dish arrives consistent and satisfying. Come for a business lunch or a group dinner, order the tangsuyuk, and pick a seat facing the lanterns rather than the screen.
