Sinar Mandala Restoran is a Chinese restaurant located on the main street of Wolter Monginsidi, South Jakarta. The first impression of Sinar Mandala Restroan was “cool”. The interior had the Chinese vibe to it but with a very maximalistic and artistic touch. There were lots of food delivery drivers inside the shop waiting for the food to be picked up. This was a clear indication that the shop was high on demand. The shop was spacious with lots of tables for big gatherings and it also had access to the second floor – which I assume would have private rooms.

It took a while for the food to be served. Given the small number of tables at the site, I would assume that there was a long queue for food for delivery requests.
We ordered the shop’s flagship menu – Mie Goreng Ulang Tahun (which translates to “Birthday fried noodle”). It was a pile of egg noodle with lots of proteins and veggies. The restaurant introduces Mie Goreng Ulang Tahun as follows: “Originally appearing in Chinese tradition, these long-term noodles symbolize happiness, luck, and certainly longevity! Noodles cooked with love and a variety of special spices are always a favorite when celebrating special moments.”. Honestly, I didn’t see any “wow” factor in the dish other than the huge portion. I would assume the over-sized portion was to make everyone take a small bite (at least). It was actually enough to satisfy 4 people.
A quick mention on other dishes:
- Ayam Nanking Saus Mentega: Nice presentation. A halal version of sweet and sour pork is my interpretation (except the sauce is not mixed with the dish). The crispy outside texture was a key takeaway.
- Pangsit goreng: This is something I would re-order. It was extra crispy with loaded meat inside the dumpling.
- Kangkung Cah Sapi & Telur Puyuh: What an interpretation. I loved how they added lots of tender meat and quail eggs into the dish. The sauce was not so spicy and the mixture of veggies and meat makes this dish compete as a main dish, rather than a side-kick
- Beef Steak: There wasn’t something magical here. The beef was mush and I think the sauce over overwhelming for this to be called “steak”. But the dish comes on a sizzling cast iron pan – which makes it pleasing to watch.
I would have no problem coming back for more, however, this would not be on my top go-to list. If you are at the site, please try
- Mie goreng ulang tahun
- Pangsit goreng
- Kangkung Cah Sapi & Telur Puyuh
