Marugame Udon is one of the best Udon & Tempura dishes from Japan. Their website claims that all recipes used are original recipes directly from Marugame Japan, cooked using quality ingredients, processed in each outlet using special techniques from Japan and controlled with strict quality assurance standards in each outlet. Cutting to the chase, what they mean is: “trust our ingredients and we cook with high standard”.

Marugame Udon FX Sudirman is located on the ground floor of FX Mall in Sudirman. It occupies a decent amount of space, which is usually crowded throughout the day. The first impression of the shop is generally expected and very much in line with other shops across the nation.
I think the only main dish to get is the Niku Udon – a warm udon with a loaded umami kake dashi broth, and topped with imported sukiyaki beef. Niku Udon is savory, sweet and rich in umami thanks to their special shoyu sauce. It’s actually irresistible to pass on this soup especially after a heavy drink out night or tough overnight work. The moment you sip the soup, it feels so warm and just right. The soup will send sweat all over your body.
After the order is done, make yourself to the self-service station where you can add some green onion, chili and agedama (fried tempura bits) and your green tea. The udon doesn’t have too much flour aroma to it, but the beef had some strong beef smell at the bite. And to my surprise, the sukyaki beef slices were a bit chewy. I would assume they didn’t have good management over the beef.
The tempura was ok. No surprises there. They did a nice job of over-coating the shrimp with tempura batter – which makes the visual pretty sexy. But unfortunately, the shrimp itself was not as exciting as the visual.
Please re-visit my first review of Marugame Udon in 2015 (10 years ago). Niku Udon in 2015 was priced at IDR45k (vs. IDR60k now, representing 33% inflation over 10 years)
